FACE – A – BOOK

Tzomet Sfarim, a book chain based in Israel, is using a variation of the Facebook logo in their print ads to attract Israeli youngsters who may be too addicted to the social web especially Facebook.

The ad reads “Face a Book” with the tag line – “Disconnect for a while, read a book.” Obviously the idea is to disconnect from the internet and switch to reading “physical” books.

The color scheme and fonts used for “Face a Book” ad are the same as the original Facebook logo and I won’t be surprised if the legal team at Facebook manage to take this down. That may however be a good thing for the Israeli book store as takedown notices on the web often bring more publicity.

The Khaju Bridge (Pol-e-Khajoo) in Isfahan, Iran, was built in the 17th century by Shah Abbas II. The bridge also serves as a dam, with sluice gates under the archways. When the gates are closed, the water level behind the bridge is raised to irrigate gardens alongside the Zayandeh River.

The Khoju Bridge has two stories of arcades, marked by the distinctive intersecting arches decorated with richly colored tiles. At the center of the bridge, there are two large pavilions, called the Prince Parlors, that were originally reserved for the Shah

9. Pont du Gard

Pont du Gard, an aqueduct spanning the Gard River in southern France, is a masterpiece of Roman engineering. It wasn’t built to transport people (though there is a pedestrian footbridge on it) – instead, it was part of a complex aqueduct system that carried water over 30 miles (about 50 km) to the ancient Roman city of Nemausus (now Nîmes).

The Pont du Gard was built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (63 – 12 BC), the son-in-law of Caesar Augustus. The bridge’s stones, some of which weigh up to 6 tons, were cut perfectly to fit together without any mortar.

The wedge-shaped stones, known as voussoirs, were arranged in three levels, the top-most being the water conduit. So precise was the engineering that the entire system descends only 56 ft. (17 m) vertically – over 30 miles! – to deliver 5 million gallons (20,00 m³) of water to the city.

8. Bridge of Sighs

In the 19th century, Lord Byron named a Venetian limestone bridge across the Rio di Palazzo connecting the Doge’s prison to the interrogation room in the main palace, the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri). Supposedly, the prisoners would sigh when they look out the window – with stone bars no less – to see their last view of beautiful Venice before their imprisonment, torture or execution.

In reality, Doge’s prison held mostly small-time criminals. Also, the bridge was built in 1600 by Antonio Contino, after the days of the inquisitions and summary executions. Legend has it that if lovers kissed on a gondola underneath the Bridge of Sighs at sunset, their love would last for eternity.

The Iron Bridge, spanning the Severn river in Shropshire, England, isn’t a particularly large or ornate bridge, but it does have something that made it unique: it’s the first bridge made completely out of cast iron.

In the 18th century, Shropshire was rich in iron and coal – indeed, there were more iron factories within two-mile radius of the town than any other city in the world. It was also there that iron was first smelt with coke. So it was only natural that the bridge would be made out of iron, a stronger alternative to wood. (Photo of the railing: zorro [Flickr])

Architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard proposed a single arch bridge that would let boats pass underneath, but he died before the bridge was built. The construction of the Iron Bridge was carried out by a local master ironworker named Abraham Darby III. About 400 tons (363 tonnes) of cast iron was used, with about 800 separate castings. The Iron Bridge has 5 arch ribs, each cast in two halves. It only took three months to put the parts together (which they did using screws instead of bolts!).

Still talking about books, in one of the Book Fairs that i would LOVE To go to, ABU DHABI BOOK FAIR 2008 will introduce and for the first time ever, the concept of BOOKCROSSING:

KITAB, the joint venture company between the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) and the Frankfurt Book Fair, and organiser of the upcoming 18th Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF), is warming up for ADIBF by bringing the global initiative that is ‘BookCrossing’ to Abu Dhabi.

Starting on 4th March, a week prior to the Fair, Kitab will during one week distribute over 350 books (13 different titles) free-of-charge to the public from a booth in the Capital’s Marina Mall. Each book will contain its own dedicated serial number and a sticker asking the reader to log on to www.bookcrossing.com and register that they are reading the book. When finished with the book, the reader is asked to pass it on to friends or family, or leave it in a public place, so that it may be read by someone else. All those who have read the book can then track its journey on-line, as it passes from person to person. All the books being distributed have been written by authors attending this year’s ADIBF, including Alaa al-Aswany, Turqi Al-Hamad, Khairy Shalaby, to name a few. Source

Do fish Drink Water:

Once upon a time i had a book called “Do fish drink water” … i actually bought it because i didn’t know the answer of the question… and realized that there were many other questions i didn’t have the answers for !

To answer the question…Do you remember the science lesson “osmosis” and “diffusion” well it is almost the same concept here.

The MadSci Network explains that fish need to keep a certain concentration of salt in their bodies. Marine fish need to worry about preventing water loss, because they already get plenty of salt. They drink sea water, and their gills process the water but remove the salt. In fact, some saltwater fish lack properly functioning kidneys, in order to help avoid losing too much water.Freshwater fish have the opposite problem: They need more salt. They absorb water through their skin and have effective ways of excreting excess liquid to maintain the salt they need.

Japan Tobacco:

You know how obsessed i am with …. “not cigarettes” :p … ADVERTISEMENTS people !

I was checking out my fav site and reached to this article which showed several ads of Japan Tobacco. They tried to have an awareness campaign but retain their customers at the same time… check out some of their ads ! (the comments on the website were hilarious though)

It’s not what’s shown on the sign that scares me, its what it implies. Remember that old mother’s cliché, “you’ll put someone’s eye out with that thing!”… well, the “thing” is the red-hot end of a cigarette and the “eye” belongs to an innocent, rosy-cheeked child. You make the connection. Or as the ad urges, DON’T make it. Smoke carefully, a child’s sight may depend on it! Oh, and the helicopter in the upper right corner? Don’t ask me, I was hoping YOU knew.

This makes sense – and without straining your brain for 20 minutes trying to figure it out. The phrasing conforms to Japanese cultural norms in that it does not demand you “stub out lit cigarettes!!”, but instead merely suggests you (A) consider how the consequences of your actions affect society at large and (B) do the right thing. On the lighter side, note the graphic “crown of thorns” over the fireman’s head denoting shock and/or surprise, a common feature in these ads
